From Bob Dylan to SAP TechEd 2018, Times are A-Changin’ via DevOps for SAP
“...
If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'.”
A certain Robert Zimmerman - you might know him better as Bob Dylan - wrote these words in the early sixties for his song The Times They Are A-Changin’. It’s almost a given Bob wasn’t talking about business agility or software development - the general opinion seems to be that he had loftier things in mind - but I thought of these lines as the seasons turn from summer to autumn here in the UK (summer to fall, for readers in the US), and we consider what the rest of the year has in store for Basis Technologies.
So only 56 years after the release of the track and album of the same name, I’m using one of the 20th century’s best-loved folk songs as a Tenuous Blog Link. Surely now we can all agree that Bob has really made it.
Seriously though, the words did strike a chord (if you’ll excuse the pun). The times are a-changin’. Digital disruption is shaking up all kinds of industries and enterprise organizations of all sizes. Long-established household names are going to the wall. New pretenders have risen up to dominate the 21st-century business landscape. Businesses that want to stay alive - let alone become more competitive and win - can’t just carry on doing the same as they always have.
Regular readers of the Basis Technologies blog will know that we believe transformation of your IT systems - and in particular your SAP landscape - is a critical part of positioning your business to succeed. That transformation could come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It might include adoption of agile development methods; a more automated approach that leads to Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD); or even full-blown DevOps that genuinely connects the business to IT.
Regardless of the method the goals tend to be similar:
- Deliver more of what the business needs.
- Do it faster, but with less risk.
- Reduce the cost of change, even as you change more often.
These outcomes are exactly what Basis Technologies’ automation technology is designed to help firms achieve, and now we’ve got even more to offer thanks to a new version of our ground-breaking SAP test automation software, Testimony. Announced just last week, Testimony 2.0 will be shown in public for the first time alongside our market-leading SAP change automation solution, ActiveControl, at SAP TechEd 2018 Las Vegas, the DSAG-Jahreskongress 2018 in Leipzig, Germany, and SAP TechEd 2018 Barcelona.
But what is Testimony 2.0, I hear you ask? And what does it do?
Well, in a nutshell Testimony addresses the challenge of regression testing in SAP software by employing a totally new technology called Robotic Test Automation (RTA). Testimony’s server-side RTA engine automatically creates, executes and updates a comprehensive regression test library with an unprecedented level of coverage.
Now Testimony 2.0 gives users a deeper level of insight that makes defect remediation even faster. It includes a variety of new features, developed in response to user feedback, that help with quick and efficient interpretation of the extensive data set that the tool provides. With Testimony 2.0 test teams now have more ways to rapidly analyze the causes of failure, and are better equipped than ever to make informed assessments of the true business risk when delivering change in SAP systems.
Together, ActiveControl and Testimony form the most comprehensive automation platform for SAP change, enabling firms to adopt DevOps for SAP, ‘shift left’ and perform full regression testing for every release.
In other words, it’s a combination that helps to deliver more of what the business needs, faster, with less risk, at a lower cost. A platform that helps you move with the times as they change, or better, still stay ahead of them.
Maybe Bob would approve. Either way, the ability to continuously test and deploy high quality changes with fewer resources will give your company the business agility it needs to stay competitive and grow.
