UKISUG Connect 2016: A faster pace of change and … more sausages?
With UKISUG Connect 2016 rapidly approaching, and planning for our event booth nearly complete, I suddenly realised that my one-year Basis Technologies anniversary has just gone by. It was nearly a year ago that I wrote a blog about our attendance at the UK & Ireland SAP User Group conference, though it feels more like a few weeks!
A lot has happened since then - not least a growing increase in agile and DevOps for SAP, an expanding roster of customers for our DevOps Toolset and the introduction of two exciting new products, Consolidator and DevAnalytics - but looking back across the past 12 months it’s clear that other themes from last year also continue to be just as relevant (though it remains to be seen whether the German oompah band and accompanying sausages will make as much of an impression this time round).
Cormac Watters, MD of SAP UK, said at the opening of the 2015 conference, ‘The speed of change today is faster than ever before’ and that’s certainly a sentiment the Basis Technologies team have heard more and more in 2016.
Why? Well, how about ‘digital transformation’? Or the Internet of Things (IoT)? We could throw in The Cloud, big data and analytics. Cyber-security is becoming a mandatory consideration (witness the recent Mirai botnet attack that utilised devices connected to the IoT). None of these topics are new but they’re all growing in prominence, and that’s far from a comprehensive list.
On top of all that there’s the simple fact that both customers and employees - in whatever field - are growing more and more demanding. They want same-day delivery, and realtime stock updates. Instant access to data through attractive user interfaces. Constant updates and improvements. Mobile optimisation. Personalisation. And more.
The end result is that IT and Operations teams are having to change the way they work. In some cases it’s forced upon them, in others it’s just making good business sense. In SAP terms this might simply mean improving your release management processes, perhaps with a bit of automation to speed things up. In many cases it’s more than that though. We talk to more and more firms that are adopting agile development and DevOps somewhere in their business and, having seen the benefits, are wondering how these approaches can be applied to SAP.
If you’re visiting UKISUG Connect this year, come and see us at stand P6 to learn more about how our DevOps Toolset can ensure that your SAP systems can keep pace with the rest of your business. What’s more, our resident agile/DevOps expert, James Roberts, will be presenting on ‘How to implement Agile and DevOps to transform SAP delivery processes’ in the Application Development & Life-cycle Management seminar stream. It’s at 15.40 on Monday the 21st, so don’t miss it!
We’re looking forward to meeting some new faces, and to seeing our existing UK partners and customers in Birmingham on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of November.
